Three Modalities of Learning Styles (V-A-K)
First, there are four if you study neuro-linguistic programming.
- The "V" which is for visual, that which you make sense with your visual sense.
- Then "A" that's the auditory, which you make sense with sound.
- The third the "K" of the VAK is kinesthetic that’s tactile, that’s where you involve people.
- And there’s auditory-digital, that is your self-talk to yourself, so you hear something when you talk to yourself about it.
That self-talk to me is the most powerful, because if you change someone’s self-talk through their visual and other auditory sense you change that person’s destiny.
I believe all four have to be put into place to learn quickly. I firmly believe in visual, I give you mental pictures even when I’m talking to you. Auditory, I’m giving you sounds like you heard earlier and you’re hearing me speak. Auditory-digital, I constantly put self-talk in your mind; I can do this, I can’t do this.
You’re probably asking yourself, does this make sense? Do you see what I just did? Transparently, if I were transparent, which I’m going to be and I am, I’m giving you self-talk that’s auditory-digital. I do that a lot. I don’t even do it consciously, but I do it a lot, because I think self-talk can be the most destructive or enabling – you choose – force in the universe as far as your senses go.
Then there’s the kinesthetic sense where you’re tactically involved. Right now if you’re taking notes it’s your kinesthetic, if you’re grabbing a mouse that’s kinesthetic. People make sense differently of the world and how they learn.
We’re all a little bit of all four, but some of us have a much greater propensity towards one.
